In America, when people say “man’s best friend”, they don’t mean another person. Instead, they are talking about a lovely animal:A dog! These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give happiness to people’s lives. Some people think of their pets as their children. A few even leave all their money to their pets when they die!
Animals can help people, too. Dogs can be taught to become the“eyes”for a blind person or “ears”for a deaf person. Scientists have found that pets help people live longer! They make people happier, too. Because of that, animals are brought into hospitals for “visit”.
Americans hold “Be-Kind-to-Animals Week”in the first week of May.
Pet shows are held during the week. Even if you don’t live in America, you, too, can do this. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food. Also, be sure to keep your pet from those unwanted babies.
If you don’t have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don’t kick (踢) it or throw things at it. Instead, just leave it alone, or better it yet, make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to an animal, try to shop them. As people, we must protect animals who can’t speak for themselves.

“When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.” That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse farm. He wrote about his dream in great detail. He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F.
The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and the teacher said, ‘This is an unrealistic(不现实) dream for a young boy like you. Owning a horse ranch(牧场) needs a lot of money. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal , I will think about your grade again.’
The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I'll keep my dream.’
Monty then turned to the assembled group(召集的人群) and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two summers ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.” When the teacher was leaving, he said, “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. Some people don’t mind being fat. Other people can keep slim without any effort. But a lot of people do put on too much weight and don’t like it. The question is, what can they do about it?
Some believe exercise can be helpful. But the trouble is that it only makes you want to eat more. You might sweat out(减去)a couple of pounds playing tennis or climbing a mountain, but you put it all back on again with a big steak or bread and jam.
A helpful way is food-choosing. But what sort of food should you choose? Some believe that the less they eat, the slimmer they will be. They don’t eat anything until they become weak with hunger. Some stick to milk and bananas. You’ll find you need a lot of bananas, and unless you live where they grow, they aren’t cheap. Another theory says that if you eat things like hard-boiled eggs, apples with their skins on, and lean meat which are hard for your stomach do digest(消化),the more you eat, the thinner you get. This is because you use up the fat in your body to get the energy to digest the food.
For most of us these methods are too extreme(极端的). The simplest way is just to cut down on the carbohydrate; that means not eating bread, potatoes, cakes, sugar, rice and so on and eating anything else you like. It’s straight-forward and often quite effective.
Still others like to be more scientific. They are calorie counters. They get a table which tells them that, for example, 100 grams of roast leg of lamb give you 330 calories and a 50 gram helping of Yorkshire pudding gives you 130 calories.
64. There seems nothing wrong with exercise EXCEPT that .
A. it makes you sweat B. it’s hard work C. it tires you out D. it makes you eat more
65. The practical method suggested in this passage means .
A. sticking to bananas B. not eating many carbohydrates

67. Which of the following do you think is the best title for the passage?

Everyone has got two personalities—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you are awake because you can control your behavior, but when you are asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their positions. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to displease people. So you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t quite sure of yourself.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgment, but you don’t raise your hope too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up, you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to on your own. You’re easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well—balanced personality. You know your strengths and weakness. You’re usually careful. You believe in yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes people rather angry.

Dear Worried,
I have received your letter and I’m glad to give you some suggestions. First of all, don’t be disappointed. Many students find it difficult to write well. In my opinion, if you want to improve your writing, you can do several things. First, do some study with set phrases and sentence structures. Keep a list of them and then try to make some sentences with them. Second, read as much as possible. There are many things that can’t be learnt. You must see them in books many times. Then you’ll be able to use them correctly yourself. So, in order to write well, you must learn to read much. Finally, you’d better recite some good passages.
Good luck to you in your writing.
